Sunday brought some success for Harrogate Montpellier PC in the 2019 Northern Pairs competition in Bridlington.
Club Captain and pairs partner, Richard Burrow from Leeds PC, were crowned the 2019 Northern Pétanque Pairs Champions!
Winning all of their morning qualifying matches, they came through the knockout stage in the afternoon to win the final in front of a large crowd of fellow competitors and spectators.
Charles commented, “We had great weather, and high quality competitive play.”
The annual RCMT event was held at Leeds PC in Headingley on Saturday, attracting 28 players and a ‘good crowd’ of Roy’s family and friends.
Roy was a founder member of the Leeds club, on Glen Road, with the Harrogate Chairman, Nigel Clay, in 2006. Roy sadly passed away in 2016.
After a round of triples and doubles, the ‘match’ was well won by the home team, who retained the Roy Cotton Memorial Trophy for another year.
Thanks to Leeds PC for their great hospitality!
The picture shows Paul Matthews receiving the trophy from Nigel.
We may be ready for a home fixture in 2020!
The ROY COTTON MEMORIAL event is on
SATURDAY 7th SEPTEMBER!!!!
All other details are correct.
Congratulations to Club Captain, Charles Stewart (right), on a magnificent performance at last weekend’s Northern Region Singles & Shooting Championships
Having lost narrowly to Northern President, Alan Swift (left), in the Singles Final, Charles took the title of Northern Singles Shooting Champion 2019.
He will now represent the North in the National Championships! Bon chance, mon brave!!

Congratulations to our West Yorkshire Cup team who beat arch rivals, Leeds PC, by 4 games to 1 in the semi-final at The Pierhead last Friday (2nd August)!
Jim, Nigel, Sandy, Brenda, Sue and Charles will now take on Heckmondwike, or Huddersfield, in the Final in a couple of weeks’ time, and probably on neutral ground at the Leeds terrain in Headingley.
HMPC won both the Gents and Ladies Triples, and mixed pairs wins for Brenda/Charles and Sue/Nigel secured a resounding victory.
Details for the Final to follow.
Who says you can’t play in the snow!?
Brenda, David, Keith and Alan wrapped up for the conditions on Sunday morning.
(Nigel and Sue H are ‘out of sight’!)
With best wishes to all members and friends for 2019.
Play will continue through the winter on Sunday mornings at The Pierhead from 11 am – weather permitting! That’s a ‘dry’ weather forecast, and a few degrees above ‘zero’.
Hint: You can warm your boules in the oven at 60c for about 15/20 minutes before you come down. BUT be careful to check they’re not too hot to handle before you take them out!
The next event will be the Club’s AGM in March and details will be circulated once the arrangements are confirmed.
The last melee of the season, on Sunday lunchtime (30th), was won by Bob Laughton. Fine weather, but with a cold wind, brought out 21 competitors, to play over 4 rounds of triples with different team partners.
Thanks to all who took part and enjoyed a shared, an extensive ‘pot luck’ buffet lunch both during the competition, and for a few, afterwards at Cafe Nero!
Bob Laughton was victorious with 4 wins (28 points), with Nigel Clay and Brenda Sutcliffe joint runners up with 25 points.
Thanks to Sue Howe for organising, and all those who contributed to the feast.
Club Chairman, Nigel Clay, presenting the ‘Luchon’ trophy to Bob – he’s the old chap with a flat cap, club top and wearing glasses – but shorter!
